Briefing

About Counter-Strike 2 server hosting

Counter-Strike 2 is free to play on Steam, and its dedicated server shares the game's app ID, 730. A server is how a team or community gets its own scrim room, retake practice map or public listing, with its own password and config. Anyone can host one, but a public server needs a Steam Game Server Login Token made at steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers with App ID 730, one token per server.

Steam's token page says the account must own the game and must not be banned, locked or limited, and needs a qualifying registered phone. Tokens are the owner's responsibility, so don't share them. Resetting the account's Steam password regenerates all of them. At checkout on EZ Game Host you paste the 32-character token, the server name, an optional password, a player cap up to 64 and a starting map, which defaults to de_dust2.

Valve publishes no RAM figure for the server that we could find. A hosting image for CS2 lists 2 CPUs, 2 GiB of RAM and at least 60GB of free disk, and another guide asks for 70GB. Disk is the real constraint, which is why CS2 starts on Pro at EZ Game Host: Pro has 80GB, and lower plans have 40GB.

Setup

How to set up a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server

You can run the server yourself or let EZ Game Host run it for you. Here is what each path involves.

With EZ Game Host

  1. Choose Counter-Strike 2 and a plan sized for your group.
  2. Name your server and pick its game options and region at checkout.
  3. Pay, and the server deploys automatically with 3 backup slots ready.
  4. Share the server address with friends and manage everything from the panel.

Self-hosting on your own machine

  1. Install SteamCMD, then run app_update 730 with +login anonymous into a folder owned by a non-root user.
  2. Link steamclient.so into ~/.steam/sdk64 so the server can start.
  3. Create a Game Server Login Token for App ID 730 at steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers, one per server.
  4. Edit game/csgo/cfg/server.cfg, and put mode-specific rules in gamemode_<mode>_server.cfg.
  5. Launch cs2 with -dedicated, -port, -maxplayers, +game_type, +game_mode, +map and +sv_setsteamaccount.
  6. Open UDP 27015 (and 27020 for SourceTV), restart after each CS2 patch, and copy your cfg folder off the machine as a backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does CS2 hosting start at the Pro plan?
CS2 is a big install, and Pro is the first plan with the 80GB disk it needs. Lower plans have 40GB. Premium has 160GB if you want room for extra maps and content.
What do I need before I check out?
A Steam Game Server Login Token for App ID 730. Make it at steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers with an account that owns CS2, then paste the 32-character token at checkout. Each server needs its own token.
Which map and mode does my server start on?
Checkout defaults to de_dust2 with 12 players, game_mode 1 and game_type 0, which is competitive. You can change the starting map, the server name, the player cap and an optional password at checkout.
Can I use my own server.cfg for scrims?
Yes. Upload your configs through the panel file manager. Mode-specific rules go in gamemode_<mode>_server.cfg files in the game's cfg folder. Plugins and custom files are yours to keep compatible after each CS2 patch.
How many players can my server hold?
Pro has 24 slots and Premium has 64. The checkout player cap can go up to 64.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. Plans are monthly with no contract, so you can cancel any time.
What ports does a CS2 server use?
27015 for game traffic, UDP and TCP, and 27020 UDP for SourceTV by default. If you change -port, the game port moves with it. EZ Game Host opens the ports for you.
Why do I need a Steam token for a CS2 server?
Without a valid Game Server Login Token, a server can start but players on the internet generally can't join. Make one for App ID 730 at steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers and use one token per server.
How much RAM does a CS2 server need?
Valve does not publish a figure that we found. A hosting image lists 2 GiB of RAM as a requirement and another guide suggests about 4GB for a 5v5, but EZ Game Host starts CS2 on Pro for its 80GB disk, since the install is large.
