About ARK: Survival Evolved server hosting

EZ Game Host's ARK plans run ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), the Unreal Engine 4 game, not ARK: Survival Ascended. The two are separate games with separate dedicated servers: ASE uses Steam app 376030 and Steam Workshop mods, while Ascended uses a different server app and CurseForge mods, so an ASE mod list does not carry over. ASE's server runs natively on 64-bit Windows and Linux, and its MaxPlayers setting defaults to 70, which is the cap on our Pro and Premium plans.

RAM depends on the map more than on player count. The ARK wiki lists 3.5 to 4.5 GiB for an empty The Island and 10 to 12.5 GiB for Genesis: Part 2, plus an average of 50 to 150 MiB per connected player, and usage keeps rising as tribes build and tame. For CPU, the wiki says 2 logical cores per server is enough and single-thread speed counts more than core count. In a cluster, every map is its own server instance with its own RAM, which is why Premium (32GB) is the plan for multi-map clusters.

Platform support is narrower than many players expect. ASE dedicated servers support crossplay between Steam and Epic only, using the -crossplay and -PublicIPForEpic launch options. ASE on Xbox crossplays with the Microsoft Store PC version, and PlayStation players cannot play with PC. A Steam-based ASE server, including EZ Game Host's, is for PC players. Settings are split between GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini, and a setting in the wrong file or section is ignored.

Self-hosting on your own machine

Install SteamCMD and download the ASE dedicated server with app_update 376030, about 18 GiB, on 64-bit Windows or Linux.
Start the server once to create GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini, stop it, then edit your settings.
Forward UDP 7777-7778 and 27015, plus TCP 27020 for RCON, by hand, since the server does not support UPnP.
Write a startup script that runs ShooterGameServer with the map's level name, session name, ports and MaxPlayers.
List Workshop mod IDs in ActiveMods under [ServerSettings] and add -automanagedmods so the server downloads and updates them.
Before each update, run SaveWorld and DoExit, rerun app_update 376030, and back up the SavedArks folder regularly.
