About Terraria server hosting

Terraria's dedicated server is TerrariaServer, which comes with the Steam version of the game and is also a free download from terraria.org for Windows, macOS and Linux. It reads its settings from serverconfig.txt, listens on TCP port 7777, and stores each world as a single .wld file. The server saves at dawn each in-game day and on the save command. Vanilla Terraria has no whitelist, so a server password is the main way to keep a world private.

Modded play is a separate setup. tModLoader is a free Steam app with its own dedicated server, and the vanilla TerrariaServer can't load mods. Every player needs tModLoader and the same mods as the server, though it can usually download missing mods when a player joins. Dedicated servers are a PC feature: Steam and GOG players can join by IP, console players can't join a PC dedicated server, and tModLoader is PC-only. Every player must run the same game version as the server.

The maxplayers setting goes up to 255, but most groups are far smaller, and world size matters as much as headcount. Small worlds are 4200x1200 tiles, medium 6400x1800 and large 8400x2400, and larger worlds use more memory. EZ Game Host's Basic plan (4GB RAM, 8 players) is listed for vanilla, Standard (8GB, 16 players) adds tModLoader, and Pro (16GB, 16 players) adds full mod support. Self-hosting on your own machine

Find TerrariaServer.exe in your Steam install folder, or download the dedicated server files for Windows, macOS or Linux from terraria.org.
Create serverconfig.txt next to the server with the world path, autocreate size, difficulty, maxplayers, port and password.
Forward TCP 7777 on your router to the server PC and allow TerrariaServer.exe or port 7777 through Windows Defender Firewall.
Start the server with TerrariaServer.exe -config serverconfig.txt and give friends your public IP to use in Join via IP.
Keep the console window open while people play, and type exit to save and stop instead of closing the window.
