How to Set Up a Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server (Windows & Linux)

By Matthew Zhao|
Left 4 Dead 2Guides

Left 4 Dead 2 lobbies have a habit of ending when the person hosting them leaves, lags or loses their connection. A dedicated server takes that job off your crew. Nobody has to stay in the game for the safe room door to keep working, and you choose the map, the player cap and the rules.

This guide walks through installing the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server with SteamCMD, writing a server.cfg, launching it, opening the port, and adding SourceMod plugins. It also covers the Linux install problem that has been open since late 2024. Valve's own developer wiki is the reference for Source servers, but it blocked our automated reader this session, so the details below come from the community guides linked inline, Steam's store page and Steam news. If a step doesn't match what you see, trust the game's console output.

Why Run a Dedicated Left 4 Dead 2 Server?

A lobby that outlives its host: The server keeps running whether or not anyone is in it. Your crew can join when they're ready.

Your hardware stays free: The server is a separate process, so it doesn't compete with the copy of the game you're playing on.

Your own rules: Pick the starting map, set a password, name the server, and load SourceMod plugins if you want them.

Player counts: Left 4 Dead 2 supports up to 4 players in co-op and up to 8 in versus, according to FireDaemon's setup article. A dedicated server is about availability and control, not raising those limits.

What You'll Need

  • A server machine running Windows. Linux is possible, but see the Linux section first.
  • SteamCMD, Valve's command line Steam client. The download is under 2 MB.
  • Disk space: the first download is large and can take hours on a slow connection. FireDaemon says the first download may take a few hours. Valve publishes no server RAM or CPU figures that we could find. Steam's store page lists the client minimums (2 GB RAM, 13 GB storage), which are not a server spec.
  • Port access: UDP and TCP 27015 by default (see the Ports section).
  • A text editor for server.cfg.

Step 1: Install the Server With SteamCMD

The Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server is Steam app ID 222860. The game itself is app 550. Download and extract SteamCMD into a folder such as C:\steamcmd, then run it with these commands, as shown in this community guide and FireDaemon's article:

steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir "C:\L4D2" +app_update 222860 validate +quit

The server files land in C:\L4D2, and the game folder inside it is left4dead2. Run the same command again later to update. Stop the server before you do.

Step 2: Write server.cfg

The download does not include a server.cfg, so create one in C:\L4D2\left4dead2\left4dead2\cfg\. A minimal file, based on the community guide:

hostname "Your Server Name Here"
rcon_password change_this_now
sv_lan 0
sv_consistency 0
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
  • hostname is the name shown to players.
  • rcon_password is a placeholder in the guides. Replace it with something only you know.
  • sv_lan 0 makes it an internet server rather than a LAN one.
  • sv_consistency 0 and sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 are what the community guide uses. We could not find Valve documentation for them this session, so check the console if behaviour surprises you.

FireDaemon's longer example file also shows sv_password (empty by default), sv_region, sv_downloadurl for serving custom content over HTTP, sv_logfile 1, and exec banned_user.cfg for a ban list.

Step 3: Launch the Server

Run srcds.exe from the game folder with these options, taken from FireDaemon's article:

srcds.exe -console -game left4dead2 -secure +map c1m1_hotel -autoupdate +log on +maxplayers 4 -port 27015 +ip YOUR_LAN_IP +exec server.cfg

What each option does:

  • -console turns on the text display. FireDaemon notes the server can only be restarted automatically in text mode.
  • -game left4dead2 loads the game.
  • -secure enables VAC. Remove it if you don't want VAC.
  • +map c1m1_hotel is the starting map. Change it to any map you have. FireDaemon says never to remove the option.
  • -autoupdate is not implemented on Windows, so update by hand.
  • +maxplayers sets the cap, and it can only be set at startup. Use 4 for co-op or 8 for versus.
  • -port defaults to 27015. FireDaemon says 27015 to 27020 works, which matters when you run several servers on one IP.
  • +ip should be your machine's IP address, not 127.0.0.1.
  • +exec server.cfg runs your config. A second server can use server2.cfg.

If the server dies, the community guide wraps srcds in a small batch file that restarts it in a loop. FireDaemon runs it as a Windows service instead. If you do that, turn off Graceful Shutdown in the service settings, because FireDaemon says Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't respond to it.

Ports and Firewall

Forward port 27015 on your router to the server machine, and allow it through Windows Firewall. The guides we read do not state the protocol, so open both UDP and TCP for 27015 unless you have verified the game only needs one. If you set -port to a different value, forward that one instead.

Linux: The Install Problem

On Linux, SteamCMD has been unable to install app 222860 since late 2024. Running app_update 222860 with +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType linux fails with "Failed to install app '222860' (Invalid platform)". The report in Valve's steam-for-linux issue 11522 is still open and unassigned, and the most recent comment, from July 2026, says it remains unresolved. People in that thread report these workarounds:

  • Log in with a Steam account that owns Left 4 Dead 2 instead of anonymous.
  • Install with the platform set to Windows, then switch to Linux. One person warns this can make the server unstable once plugins are added.
  • Use DepotDownloader 2.7.4 or later.

None of these are Valve-confirmed fixes. If you want a Linux server, read the thread before you start.

Adding Custom Campaigns and Workshop Content

Left 4 Dead 2 supports the Steam Workshop on the client, and the dedicated server loads add-ons from left4dead2\addons. The community guide uses the steam_workshop_downloader tool with Python to pull Workshop collections into that folder (it works with collections, not single items). Content on the server and content on each player's PC both matter, so sv_downloadurl in the config can point players at a web server to fetch custom files.

Adding SourceMod and Metamod

Plugins run on Metamod:Source and SourceMod. The AlliedModders install page says to install Metamod:Source 1.9.0 or newer first, then extract SourceMod so the mod folder contains addons with both metamod and sourcemod folders. For Left 4 Dead 2 the mod folder is left4dead2. Use the Windows .zip or the Linux .tar.gz build to match your server.

Then restart the server completely and check it from the server console:

  • meta list should list SourceMod.
  • sm version prints the SourceMod version.
  • The community guide also uses sm plugins list to confirm plugins loaded.

To make yourself an admin, the community guide adds a line to addons\sourcemod\configs\admins_simple.ini with your SteamID and flags, for example "STEAM_0:1:123345" "99:z". Plugins go in addons\sourcemod\plugins and their translation files in addons\sourcemod\translations.

Plugins and custom content are your responsibility to keep compatible. A game update can break a plugin until its author updates it.

Updating the Server

Valve still patches Left 4 Dead 2. Steam's news feed lists updates on June 26, 2026 (several crashes and exploits reported through HackerOne) and June 30, 2026 (a revised Linux build fix with the latest security patches). Earlier posts include fixes for exploits that crash remote servers. Since -autoupdate doesn't work on Windows, re-run the SteamCMD command above after a patch, with the server stopped. FireDaemon suggests roughly weekly.

Backups

The sources we read give no official save location. What is worth copying is the config and add-on state you built: left4dead2\cfg\server.cfg, any extra cfg files, left4dead2\addons and your SourceMod configs folder. Copy them before big changes.

Troubleshooting

Server starts but nobody can join

Check that the port is forwarded to the right machine and that +ip is set to its LAN address, not 127.0.0.1. The community guide notes that a server joined without a lobby may need a direct connect using the host's IP address. Open the console and type connect IP:27015.

"UTIL_SetModel: not precached" error

The community guide lists UTIL_SetModel: not precached: models/survivors/survivor_producer.mdl as an error you may hit with custom content and links to a forum fix. Read the server log and remove the most recent add-on to see whether it is the cause.

Server closes and won't restart by itself

Automatic restart needs -console. If you run it as a service, disable Graceful Shutdown.

Plugins don't load

Run meta list. If SourceMod is missing, files are misplaced or you used the wrong build for your OS. AlliedModders notes that "Listing 0 plugins" means sourcemod.vdf is missing from addons/metamod.

Player cap won't change

+maxplayers can only be set when the server starts. Edit the launch options and restart.
